If you are planning on taking your practical driving test at the Basingstoke test centre it is easy to locate. Basingstoke test centre is close to the M3, about ten minutes from the town centre, the test centre is on Sullivan Road off Brighton Way, (next to the large ASDA supermarket) it is a small but busy test centre and is often used by local learners as well as those from neighbouring towns.

The test centre only has a small car park with limited spaces so candidates are requested not to arrive any earlier than 5 minutes before the start of their test.  On arrival make sure that no one else is manoeuvring in the car park before driving in and reverse into a parking bay, then enter the waiting room and wait for your examiner to call your name.

If you are an accompanying driver may sit in on the test if you have the learner driver's permission, but must remain silent and not interfere with the test at any time! The examiner may terminate the test if they feel that you are trying to influence the candidate.

There is a large ASDA supermarket next door, as well as a Subway, cafe, fish and chip shop as well as others to keep yourself entertained until the test is completed. (The test will last for up to 45 minutes).

What to expect on your driving test

This is the day and finally, you are ready to take your practical driving test! Of course, you will be feeling a little nervous. you don’t need to be, the examiner is just going to be observing you driving safely, and the test is very straightforward and shouldn’t be anything new to you.

On the day of the test, you just need to be at Basingstoke DVSA Driving Test Centre 10 mins before your test, making sure you have your Provisional Driving License with you. The test will be as follows.

• An eyesight test,  you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres.
• One “tell me” question covering vehicle safety and maintenance.

20 minutes of general driving, where you’ll be following instructions from the driving test examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres

• Parallel parking
• Forward Bay parking or Reverse Bay parking
• Pulling up on the right

One “show me” questions covering vehicle controls, this will be asked while you are driving along. 

• 20 minutes of independent driving,  you will either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination
• You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop.

Once you get back to the Basingstoke driving test centre, you’ll find out if all of your hard work has paid off. The examiner will tell you the result and give you some feedback which will contain any faults you might have accumulated. If you pass, the examiner will also give you a test pass certificate and the opportunity to send off for your new licence then and there. The full test report will be sent to you via the email that you provided when you booked your driving test.

If whilst practicing on one of these routes you do come across a candidate on an actual driving test, please be kind enough to move out of the way of the test to ensure the candidate and examiner can conduct the driving test without any distractions.
